OFFICE OF THE INFORMATION AND PRIVACY COMMISSIONER

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Information and Privacy Commissioner is an independent Officer of the House of Assembly. The Commissioner has a broad range of responsibilities and powers and may make recommendations to ensure compliance with the access and privacy provisions of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the “ATIPPA”) and the regulations. The Commissioner’s duties include reviewing a decision of a public body that relates to an access request or a request to correct personal information, investigating complaints, commenting on the information and privacy implications of proposed legislative schemes and programs of public sector bodies and informing the public about the Act.

Our office is pleased to participate with other Canadian access and privacy oversight offices in coordinating efforts to recognize Canada’s third Right to Know Week, September 28 to October 2, 2009.

Our Office also has a permanent Right to Know page on our web site at www.oipc.gov.nl.ca . From the home page simply click on the “Right to Know Week” link on the left. The page provides a brief description and history of the international Right to Know Day.
